AC/DC

AC/DC

AC/DC. Internationally successful pioneering Australian heavy metal rock band first formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. They are known for a string of hit LPs including ; Let There Be Rock (1977) / Powerage (1978) / Highway To Hell (1979) / Back in Black (1980) / For Those About To Rock (1981) and Flick Of The Switches (1983). To date they have sold over 200 million albums. Their 1980 "Back In Black" tribute to Bon Scott LP has sold 50 million copies and is the third biggest selling album of all time by any band. Original bassist Mark Evans was sacked from the group and replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977. Legendary lead singer Bon Scott died mysteriously in his car in London (on February 19th 1980 aged just 33) following a night of heavy drinking ; registered officially as death by misadventure, caused by acute alcohol poisoning. His grave site is thought to be the most visited of any in Australia............. The group considered finishing after the loss of Scott, but continued due to his parents intervention and blessing. Geordie singer Brian Johnson became the new frontman in 1980. Later that year, the band released the new album, Back to Black which was made as a tribute to Bon Scott. The album launched them to new heights of success and became their all-time best-seller. The band's next album, For Those About To Rock We Salute You was their first album to reach No1 in the United States. AC/DC declined in popularity soon after drummer Phil Rudd was fired in 1983. The band experienced a resurgence in the early 1990s with the release of  The Razors Edge and Phil Rudd returned in 1994. Stiff Upper Lip was released in 2000 and was well received by critics. The band's studio album, Black Ice was released on 20th October 2008 and was the second-highest-selling album of that year. The band's line-up remained the same until 2014 with Malcolm Young's retirement due to early-onset dementia and Rudd's legal troubles. In 2016, Brian Johnson was advised to stop touring due to his worsening hearing loss and Guns N Roses frontman Axl Rose stepped in as the band's vocalist for the remainder of that year's dates. Long-term bass player and background vocalist Cliff Williams retired from the band at the end of their 2016 Rock or Bust world tour. The group have sold more than 200 million records worldwide (including 71.5 million albums in the United States alone) making them the tenth best selling band ever in the USA and one of the world biggest selling artists of all time. Back in Black has sold an estimated 50 million units worldwide. They are ranked fourth on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". In 2004, AC/DC ranked No72 on the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". Malcolm Young died of dementia in Sydney aged 64 on November 18th 2017.
