An original embossed Foreign Office card, clearly signed and dated in ink by Austen Chamberlain 28.7.27

From the wonderful vintage 1920-30s autograph book of Bertha Sydney containing over 100 actors / politicians / sportsmen / writers and pioneers of the period. Most notably including ; Winston Churchill / David Lloyd George / Stanley Baldwin / M K Gandhi / Laurel & Hardy / Rudyard Kipling / G K Chesterton / Fay Wray & Jack Hobbs. Bertha Sydney was an actress and a member of the well known theatrical family which included film actor Basil Sydney (The Dam-Busters / Ivanhoe / Sea Wife & Treasure Island). She collected all the autographs for a decade after Christmas 1925. Some autographs are dedicated to her with additional messages and are dated. A typed letter & copy photographs are included to support the provenance and further detail the history written by her daughter (Sheila) who sold the book to us in 2018. Austen Chamberlain

SIR AUSTEN CHAMBELAIN d1937. British statesman, son of Joseph and half brother of Neville Chamberlain. He stood for the Liberal Unionist Party which merged with the Conservatives in 1912 and led the Conservatives in the Commons in 1921–22. As Foreign Secretary, he negotiated the Locarno Pact (1925), aimed at preventing war between France and Germany, for which he was awarded the Nobel peace Prize. He was one of the few MPs supporting Winston Churchill's appeals for rearmament against the German threat in the 1930s. He died in London aged 73 on March 16th 1937
