David Purley

David Purley

DAVID PURLEY d1985. British Formula 1 driver. 11GPs. He will forever be remembered for his extreme bravery whilst frantically attempting in vain to save the life of fellow F1 driver Roger Williamson at the 1973 Dutch GP. An act for which he later received The George Medal. The drama of the images associated with his valiant frustrated attempt on that sad day were to act as a catalyst for motor-racing to focus on its safety procedures in later years. David Purley also later survived one of F1s most violent accidents at the 1977 British Grand Prix. He was killed aged just 40 in a plane crash in 1985
