A lovely original vintage 1930s cariacature drawing in pencil on an autograph book page, clearly signed by Donald Calthrop.

A rare autograph for Alfred Hitchcock collectors

From the wonderful vintage 1920-30s autograph book of Bertha Sydney containing over 100 actors / politicians / sportsmen / writers and pioneers of the period. Most notably including ; Winston Churchill / David Lloyd George / Stanley Baldwin / M K Gandhi / Laurel & Hardy / Rudyard Kipling / G K Chesterton / Fay Wray & Jack Hobbs. Bertha Sydney was an actress and a member of the well known theatrical family which included film actor Basil Sydney (The Dam-Busters / Ivanhoe / Sea Wife & Treasure Island). She collected all the autographs for a decade after Christmas 1925. Some autographs are dedicated to her with additional messages and are dated. A typed letter & copy photographs are included to support the provenance and further detail the history written by her daughter (Sheila) who sold the book to us in 2018. Donald Calthrop

DONALD CALTHROP d1940. English stage and film actor. Born in London, he was educated at St Paul's School and made his first stage appearance at eighteen years of age at the Comedy Theatre London. His first film was The Gay Lord Quex released in 1917. He starred as the title character in the successful musical The Boy in the same year. He then appeared in 63 films between 1916 and 1940, including five films directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He died in Eton from a heart attack aged 52 while filming Major Barbara (1941).
