DUKE ELLINGTON d1974. Charismatic American composer pianist big band leader and one of the most influential artists in the history of recorded music. During a career spanning over 50 years, he is widely recognised to be one of the greatest figures in jazz music and since his death his recognition and reputation has continued to be enhanced. He died in New York aged 75 on May 24th 1974
