ELVIS PRESLEY d1977. American singer who became a music icon. Born in 1935 his twin brother died at birth. He grew up as an only child, unusually close to his mother jliving ust above the poverty line and regularily attending church in Tupelo Mississipi. His career begun at Sun Records under Sam Philips with his first minor hit "That's Alright Mama" in 1954. In 1956, he became a star with his first No1 "Heartbreak Hotel" and his now infamous appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. He did his National Service between 1958-1960 stationed in Germany. He restarted his career in the 1960s with his wonderful voice, extraordinary singing style / stage persona and huge catalogue of ballad / gospel type songs. He toured constantly throughout his life. His best remembered performances probably being the 1968 Comeback Special and 1973 Aloha Hawaii concerts. He was plaqued by health problems later in his life with addictions to prescription medicine for his insomnia and confidence issues ; these led to his premature death aged just 42 on August 16th 1977. His estate remains the highest earning of any deceased celebrity to this day.
