ERNEST HEMINGWAY d1961. Distinctive American writer and journalist widely considered to be one of the most influential of the 20th century ; many of his works now regarded as all time classics. He received The Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for "The Old Man and The Sea" and The Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. An alcoholic in his later years he also suffered with serious depression and was treated with electroshock therapy. He commited a fully planned suicide by shotgun on July 2nd 1961 aged 61 ; a trait that ran in the family as many of his closest relatives chose the same fate.
