Gene Vincent

GENE VINCENT d1971. Influential rockabilly pioneer best known for his classic "Be Bop a Lula" and his wild must-see stage shows of the early 1960s. He was injured as a passenger in the car crash that killed his friend Eddie Cochran in 1960. His well documented self destructive lifestyle and a long history of poor health led to his death (aged just 36) on October 12th 1971.

HOLLYWOOD ; Dear Ruby, Thanks a million for the get-well card, I was very touched. I received so many cards and letters last year and I have only just managed to get all the replies off. Thanks a million.

A lovely original 1964 Wallington Public Hall Entrance ticket for Saturday 18th April Peter Dell and The Delltones, clearly signed on the reverse in ballpoint Regards Gene Vincent.

 

Certification:

Gene Vincent played The Savoy Ballroom at Catford on this evening April 18th 1964. He played this Wallington Public Hall venue himself 3 months later on the 7th July 1964 so we believe this is the likely actual signing date. The collector possibly had this old ticket to hand at the time. The Wallington Public Hall 3 Stafford Road Surrey was a famous concert venue during the 1960-70s. 2) JERRY LEE LEWIS autograph. Early American rock n roll pioneer known for his outrageous stage performances, jumping all over and setting fire to his piano. His most classic songs include ; "Whole Lotta Shakin" (1956) / "Great Balls of Fire" (1957) and "Breathless" (1958). His well documented private life includes being married six times and his early career was destroyed for a decade due to his controversial relationship with his 13 year old first cousin Myra Lewis in December 1957.

3) HEINZ BURT autograph. German singer, bassist and protege of the legendary Telstar producer Joe Meek. He was an early member of The Tornados but left after being encouraged by Meek to become a solo-artist. He enjoyed only limited success, scoring just one minor hit "Just Like Eddie" ; backed firstly by The Saints and later The Wild Boys, both instrumental bands who worked for Meek. Heinz Burt owned the shotgun with which Meek killed his landlady and then himself in 1967. He died of motor neurone disease aged 57 in 2000.

Just one item in an extensive pop music collection all obtained by Alan Jones who played saxophone as a member of the successful late 1960s Welsh group Amen Corner, best known for their 1969 No1 hit single "If Paradise was Half as Nice". There is a copy of a letter from him further detailing a general history of his collection included.
