Ike & Tina Turner
IKE & TINA TURNER. Explosive disciplined R&B musical ensemble rivalled only by James Brown in terms of stage spectacle, led by the unique dynamic raw voice of Tina Turner and the songwriting skills of husband Ike. The duo first found success with their 1961 single "Its Gonna Work Out Fine" and then later became major stars with follow up singles ; River Deep Mountain High / Nutbush City Limits and Proud Mary. A lifetime drug addict, Ike habitually abused his wife and children physically and emotionally. After a suicide attempt, she eventually walked out on him in 1975 with just 36 cents to her name. The controversial Ike Turner was unable to re-establish his career and died of a drug overdose in 2007 aged 76. Tina Turner rebuilt her career as a solo singer & actress. She became known as "The Queen of Rock n Roll and one of the most successful female artists of all time. Selling over 180 million records / winning 8 Grammys and scoring a string of 33 UK Top 40 hit singles (including the classic "Simply the Best"). Her legendary 1980s concert tours sold more tickets than any other artist ever at the time and her "Break The Rules Tour" (1988) played to over 4 million people worldwide. She died in Switzerland aged 83 on May 24th 2023
