Jacques Laffite & Jonathan Palmer

Jacques Laffite & Jonathan Palmer

JACQUES LAFFITE. French Formula 1 driver with ISO / Ligier and Williams between 1974-1986. Career record ; 180 races / 6 wins (all with Ligier) / 32 podiums and 7 pole-positions. He rather unluckily (on the day he equalled Graham Hills record number of GP starts) broke both his legs during a multi-car pile up at the start of the 1986 British GP at Brands Hatch, this eventually leading to his retirement from Grand Prix racing. Despite the crash happening just past the pits, the first doctor on the scene happened to be British F1 driver Jonathan Palmer who had started the race in 22nd place on the grid. A qualified GP before taking up motor-racing in 1978, he stopped his Zakspeed (just past Laffite's crashed Ligier) and jumped out to assist the injured Frenchman
