Jim Clark
Jim Clark
JIM CLARK d1968. Scottish F1 driver widely regarded to be one of the greatest ever. Famously throughout his F1 career only driving for Lotus (1960-1968). Unquestionably the dominant driver of his generation entering 72GPs and scoring 33 Pole Positions with 25 Wins. Revered by all for his exceptional style and natural skill which made him a double World Champion in both 1963 and 1965. During a decade where danger and tragedy was a regular feature of the sport, his craft was believed to make him almost immune. However, he too was tragically killed (aged just 32) during a Formula 2 race in a Lotus 48 on 7th April 1968 at Hockenheim. It is thought that a slowly deflating rear tyre caused his car to veer off the circuit at high-speed into the trees surrounding the circuit........

WOLFGANG VON TRIPS d1961. German F1 driver with Ferrari / Porsche. (29 starts / 2 wins / 6 podiums). He was killed in an accident at the Italian GP Monza aged 31 on 10th September 1961. He was tightly locked in a battle for the Formula One World Drivers' Championship that year with his American teammate Phil Hill. On the second lap of the race at Monza, his Ferrari collided with Jim Clark's Lotus on the long straight before Parabolica (approaching what is now Curva Alboreto). He made contact with Clark whilst he was trying to overtake him which caused him to lose control of his car and he went straight into the crowd at high speed. His car became airborne and crashed into a side barrier, fatally throwing him from the car and sadly killing fifteen spectators. Von Trips died before reaching the hospital. The toll of the accident remains the highest in the history of Formula One. As a result of the accident, the FIA banned Formula One from competing on circuits with steeply-banked corners. Jim Clark and his car were subjected to an investigation. He was initially accused of manslaughter, before the charges were dropped
