JOHN LAURIE d1980. Scottish actor now best remembered for his role as the gaunt, intense and pessimistic undertaker Private James Frazer in the classic BBC TV sitcom Dads Army between 1968-1977. He was however primarily a notable stage actor (particularly in Shakespearean roles) and a fine speaker of verse, especially when written by Robert Burns. He also appeared in countless films directed by Alfred Hitchcock / Olivier and Powell. He died aged 83 of emphysema in 1980
