John Wayne

JOHN WAYNE d1979. Iconic Academy and Golden Globe award winning American film actor, famous for his distinctive voice walk and rugged physical presence on screen. His career began in the silent movies of the 1920s, but he became a major star between the 1940-60s in the classic westerns and war movies of the period. His most notable roles include ; Stagecoach (1939) / The Quiet Man (1952) / The Searchers (1956) / The Alamo (1960) / The Longest Day (1962) / The Green Berets (1968) and as an Oscar winner in "True Grit" (1969). Voted by The American Film Institute as the 13th Greatest Movie-Star of all time and in a 2007 Harris Poll the third greatest American film star. A lifetime heavy smoker, he had a lung and four ribs removed in 1964 during an operation for lung cancer. He died of stomach cancer on June 11th 1979.

Description:

A wonderful original 1962 EAA (East African Airways) Cabin Service & Bar Menu, clearly signed on the inside sleeve in ballpoint "Good Luck John Wayne".

 

Certification:

Obtained by the sellers Uncle during an East African Airways flight in 1962 to Tanzania. He wrote on the front of the Cabin Service Menu (as shown) "Mr Wayne. Sorry but having been recognised by my wife I will get no peace until you sign this inside. Thank you ..." He gave it to the stewardess who took it to John Wayne who then returned it signed on the inside. John Wayne was travelling to Africa at the time to film "Hatari !" Description:

An original 1974 autograph book page, clearly signed in black marker ; "Roy my best John Wayne".

 

Certification:

From the collection of Roy an employee based at Pinewood Studios UK during the 1970s ; the autograph is actually dedicated to him. John Wayne was in the UK in 1974 filming "Brannigan" at various locations in and around London and based at Shepperton Studios. Certification:

From a Kent area autograph book belonging to a schoolgirl called Sarah. Autographs would have been obtained by her in this area in 1974 when John Wayne was in the UK filming Brannigan. Description:

An original (circa 1956-7) Pigalle Club Piccadilly London programme, clearly signed in green ink by John Wayne.

The programme is also signed by Michael Wilding.

 

Certification:

The Pigalle Club in Piccadily still exists as a jazz club today. During the 1950s it was a champagne entertainment venue with a variety and dancing-girls floor-show. From the extensive 1950-70s autograph collection of Tony B containing many notables of the period all obtained in person in the London area. Description:

An original 1974 autograph book page, clearly signed and dedicated in blue ink by John Wayne (To Jean).

 

Certification:

From the outstanding & huge autograph collection of Jean Williams of Chelsea, all obtained in and around the London Theatres / London Hotels (The Dorchester / The Savoy) /  the BBC Riverside Studios and ITV TV Studios from the late 1950s into the mid 1970s. Including (amongst others) such notables as ; John Lennon / Marlon Brando / Steve McQueen / Sharon Tate / Lee Van Cleef / Ringo Starr and Natalie Wood. Most of the signatures in the collection are dedicated to her by the celebrity and then annotated and dated in her hand.  This John Wayne signature is dated 26th January 1974. Wayne flew into Heathrow Airport on the 17th January to visit London and in order to appear on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. During his stay he caught pneumonia which was potentially very serious for the 66 year old actor who only had one lung. Later this year he was also in London filming "Brannigan".
