DAME JULIE ANDREWS DBE. English film and stage actress, singer, author, theatre director and dancer. As a child actress she first appeared on the West End Stage in 1948 and then made her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend (1954). She rose to prominence starring in Broadway musicals including ; My Fair lady (1956) and Camelot (1960). In 1957, she starred in the premiere of TV musical Cinderella, a live network broadcast seen by over 100 million viewers. She made her feature film debut in Mary Poppins (1964) and won the Academy Award for Best Actress in the title role. She then starred in The Sound of Music (1965) playing Maria and won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical. In 2000, she was made a Dame for services to the performing arts. In 2002, she was ranked No59 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.
