Laurence Olivier

LAURENCE OLIVIER d1989. English actor director and producer generally considered to have been one of the greatest of the 20th century. During a six-decade career, he played many roles on stage and screen. His three Shakespeare films as actor-director ; Henry V (1944) / Hamlet (1948) and Richard III (1955) are among the pinnacles of the bard at the cinema. On stage his more than 120 roles included ; Richard III / Macbeth / Romeo / Hamlet / Uncle Vanya and Archie Rice in The Entertainer. He appeared in nearly sixty films including ; Wuthering Heights (1939) and Rebecca (1940). He was the founding artistic director of the National Theatre Company in 1963, a post in which he remained for a decade. He had earlier filled the same post at the Old Vic after the Second World War. The largest stage in the National Theatre building was later named after him. He was knighted in 1948. He retired from the stage in 1974, but his work on-screen continued until the year before his death of renal failure aged 82 in 1989.

From the autograph collection of the Hon Frances Louise Francis-Love who worked as an extra at various Film Studios including Pinewood / Elstree and Shepperton during the late 1950s. There is a notebook from 1957-58 listing the films she worked on ; which studio and her wages that was included with her collection along with a later driving license. Certification:

One of a fabulous collection of around 60 World Premiere Programmes for many of the major film releases of the mid 1960s to early 1980s, collected by Joan in London during this period. The majority signed by a selection of the stars from each film and rarely including her original entrance tickets for the performances themselves. From an important family closely associated with the film industry who were invited to these film premieres. Description:

A desirable original typed single sided letter (dated 30th September 1949) on his own headed paper, clearly signed in ink at the conclusion by Laurence Olivier.

Certification:

The letter importantly mentions one of his most famous roles. His second film as a director "Hamlet" (1948) in which he also took the lead role. One of a wonderful collection of over 50 celebrity letters all obtained during the late 1940s to early 1950s by a Mr Douglas Squires. He was involved in editing a School / University Film & Theatre Entertainment magazine during this period and wrote to celebrities looking for a contribution of autographs and signed photographs for the magazine. Many of the letters are gracious and detailed replies with many references to helping his project and mentions of their careers at that point in time.
