About

About Margaret Rutherford

Margaret Rutherford

MARGARET RUTHERFORD d1972. Reverred English character actress who first came to prominence following World War II in the film adaptations of Noel Cowards Blithe Spirit and Oscar Wildes "The Importance of Being Earnest". In 1963 she won the best supporting actress Oscar as The Duchess of Brighton in The VIPs. She is however probably best known for her 1960s performances as Miss Marple in several films based loosely around Agatha Christie novels. In later life she suffered from major bouts of depression and Alzheimers disease which prevented her from working. She died aged 80 in 1972.

Certification:

CERTIFICATION ; From the extensive autograph collection of Edna Winter of London SE16. Thought to have been an obsessive collector and hoarder, Edna amassed a massive collection of Entertainment / Film / Political and Literary autographs during the 1940-50s. She kept a detailed diary of who / when and where she obtained her autographs from ; it would appear mostly by writing to theatres / home addresses and the major A-list London hotels of the period. It is unknown how she knew which celebrity was staying where and at what time, but almost all autographs (very usefully) have venues and dates included with them ; some are also dedicated to her. Apollo Theatre London 1st May 1948. AFTAL Dealer No13 and UACC RD Memorabilia UK COA.
