About Morrissey

MORRISSEY. British lead singer of The Smiths, the influential and important British Alternative Indie rock group active between 1982 and 1987 ; the band were notable for Morrisseys unusual lyrics and Johnny Marrs complex guitar style. They released four studio LPs ; The Smiths 1984 (No2) / Meat Is Murder 1985 (No1) / The Queen is Dead 1986 (No2) and Strangeways Here We Come 1987 (No2) , along with their best known Top 10 singles This Charming Man / Heaven Knows Im Miserable Now and Sheila Take A Bow. Since their 1987 split, Morrissey has continued to enjoy a sparodically succesful solo career, but there have sadly remained over the years constant acrimonius disputes between the band members played out in the courts over rights and royalties. Despite being offered huge sums of money to reform on various occasions over the years , Morrissey and Marr have repeatedly said in interviews that this will never happen..............

Morrissey (Smiths) autographs from this period (1987) are rare and this item would certainly interest a serious Smiths fan or collector. Please read the certification section below in order to understand the fuller history, value and relevence of this particular signed cheque.

CERTIFICATION ; The cheque was signed and jokingly annotated for Mr Smith by Morrissey (who was with friend Stephen Street) outside Hatchards in Picadilly London on September 18th 1987. He met Morrissey outside the venue during a book signing for "This n That" by legendary screen actress Bette Davis. This summer was a key period in the history of The Smiths as they split at this time, amid much acrimony between the group members. They were rumoured to be leaving Rough Trade records (with whom they had been throughout their career) in order to join EMI supposedly for more money. Mr Smith suggested to us that the 300,000 reference on this cheque is Morrissey referring to and joking about the financial contract he was to have been offered with EMI.
