Olga Korbut

OLGA KORBUT. Russian gymnast who as a pigtailed 4ft 11in 17 year old caught the imagination of the wider public and became "the darling" of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. She won three gold & one silver medals for the Soviet Union. Thereby inspiring thousands of others to take up the sport at the time. Nicknamed "The Sparrow from Minsk" she subsequently followed this up with another Gold & Silver at the 1976 Olympics
