Olof Palme

OLOF PALME d1986. Swedish politician and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1969 to 1976 and 1982 to 1986. He led the Swedish Social Democratic Party from 1969 to 1986. Political violence was little-known in Sweden at the time and he often went out without a bodyguard. Close to midnight on 28th February 1986, he was walking home from a cinema with his wife Lisbeth in the central Stockholm street Sveavägen, when he was shot in the back at close range. A second shot grazed Lisbeth's back. He was pronounced dead aged 59 on arrival at the Sabbatsberg Hospital. Lisbeth survived without serious injuries
