ORSON WELLES d1985. American filmmaker, actor, director and producer widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished dramatic artists of the twentieth century. He especially is remembered for his significant early work and distinctive directorial style, despite his notoriously contentious relationship with Hollywood. He initially found national and international fame as the director and narrator of a 1938 radio adaptation of H G Wells novel "The War of The Worlds". Citizen Kane (1941), his first film for RKO is often widely considered to be the greatest film ever made. Several of his other later films including ; The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) / Touch of Evil (1958) / Chimes at Midnight (1965) and F For Fake (1974) are still regarded as film masterpieces. In 2002, he was voted the Greatest Film director of all time in two separate BFI polls among directors and critics. As an actor, he is ranked No16 on the AFI list of Greatest Ever American film actors. He died of a heart attack aged 70 in 1985
