OTIS REDDING d1967. American singer-songwriter widely regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of American popular music. Nicknamed the "King of Soul" his style of singing gained inspiration from the gospel music that preceded the genre. His best known songs include ; "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" / "Respect" and "Try a Little Tenderness". Shortly before his death in a plane crash on December 10th 1967 aged 26, he wrote and recorded his iconic "Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay" with Steve Cropper. The song became the first posthumous No1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. His premature death devastated Stax records who were on the verge of bankruptcy and the label soon discovered Atlantic Records owned the rights to his entire song catalog. He received many posthumous accolades including ; two Grammy Awards / the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
