About Phyllis Dixey

Phyllis Dixey

PHYLLIS DIXEY d1964. British singer, dancer and impresario known as "The Queen of Striptease". Her earlier career was as a singer in variety shows in Britain. During WW2, she joined ENSA and entertained the British forces. She sang, recited and posed in naked tableaux for them which proved extremely popular at the time. However by 1947 the tastes of the London audiences had changed and she was forced to return to the provinces. She was not able to adapt to the direction that the public required, leaving the stage during the late 1950s causing her to become bankrupt. She died of cancer aged just 50 in Surrey on June 2nd 1964.
