About

About Richard Burton

Richard Burton

RICHARD BURTON CBE d1984. Outstanding Welsh actor of the 1950-1970s, nominated seven times for an Academy Award (without ever winning). Despite his career beginning in UK theatres and never training as an actor, he was at his peak the highest paid actor in Hollywood after gaining a $1million dollar per year contract in 1953. His most famous films include ; My Cousin Rachel (1952) / The Robe (1953) / Dont Look Back In Anger (1960) / Cleopatra (1962) / Beckett (1964) / The Spy that Came In From The Cold (1965) / Whose Afraid Of Virginia Woolf (1966) / Anne Of A Thousand Days (1969) and Equus (1977). Despite being a star athlete in his youth, he suffered with very poor health throughout his adult life probably caused by his notoriously excessive drinking and 100 per day smoking habit. A famous womaniser, he married five times in his life including twice to actress Elizabeth Taylor in 1964 and 1975. He died from a celebral haemorrhage aged just 58 in 1984.

This photo dates from very early in Richard Burton's acting career. He had been discharged from the RAF in December 1947 after serving just three years. His first credited film role as Gareth in "The Last Days of Dolwyn" alongside Edith Evans and Emlyn Williams was released (April 1949) just four months before he wrote this letter. He met his first wife (Sybil Williams) on the set of this film and had got married in February 1949 in Kensington. At this time he was living in Lyndhurst Road Hampstead. His second film role as Paddy in "Now Barabbas" (with Richard Greene & Kathleen Harrison) had been released in May 1949. (Look at Edith Evans letter Code 8902). One of a wonderful collection of over 50 celebrity letters and photos all obtained during the late 1940s to early 1950s by a Mr Douglas Squires. He was involved in editing a School / University Film & Theatre Entertainment magazine during this period and wrote to celebrities looking for a contribution of autographs and signed photographs for the magazine. Many of the letters are gracious and detailed replies with many references to helping his project and mentions of their careers at that point in time.
