SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE d1930. Prolific Scottish author most noted for his Sherlock Holmes detective stories which are now considered to be innovative crime fiction genius. Other works include science fiction / historical novels / poetry and plays. He set up unsuccessfully in medical practice in Southsea in 1882. Whilst whilst waiting for patients he began writing and by 1887 Sherlock Holmes was born. He wrote a total of nine Sherlock Holmes stories between 1887 and 1927. He was knighted in 1902 and died of a heart attack aged 71 in 1930. His gravestone reads ; "Steel True Blade Straight Arthur Conan Doyle Knight Patriot Physician and Man of Letters"
