"I am extremely embarassed but I really don't remember about this. My memory just s getting terribly bad (old age). Anyway I am no longer at UCL and would not see. The best thing might be to ring my friend Dr Keith Walker at the English dept (he is very nice) explain the situation to him and perhaps go and see him. Perhaps you met him when he was at Dartmouth. Yours sincerely ...."

STEPHEN SPENDER CBE d1995. English poet, novelist and essayist whose work concentrated on themes of social injustice and the class struggle. He was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the United States Congress in 1965. He died of a heart attack in London aged 86 on July 16th 1995
