VILLAGE PEOPLE. American disco group of the 1970-80s known for their trade-mark on-stage personas depicting American cultural stereotypes. Originally created to target disco's gay audience by featuring popular gay fantasy personas, the band's popularity quickly brought them into the mainstream. The Village People scored a number of disco dance hits including ; Macho Man / YMCA (No1 1978) / In The Navy (No2 1979) / Go West (No15 1979) and Cant Stop The Music (No11 1980), selling upwards of 100 million records world-wide.
