Winston Churchill

WINSTON CHURCHILL d1965. British politician known chiefly for his outstanding leadership of The United Kingdom during WW2. A noted statesmen historian writer and orator with many of his speeches / anecdotes and quotations nowadays part of British folklore. Following his army career he was at the forefront of British politics for 60 years ; initially holding many political and cabinet positions before becoming Prime Minister twice (1940-1945) and (1951-1955). He had a stroke in 1953 aged 78 before ill-health forced him to retire in 1955. He spent most of his final years at Chartwell before dying at the age of 90 on 24th January 1965 after a severe stroke. In his lifetime he received numerous awards and honours including ; The First Honorary Citizen of the USA in 1963 and The Nobel Prize for Literature. In a 2002 BBC British TV Poll Winston Churchill was named "The Greatest Briton of All-Time".

A desirable original vintage circa 1920s Treasury Chambers Whitehall embossed card, clearly signed in ink by Winston S Churchill

 

Certification:

From the wonderful vintage 1920-30s autograph book of Bertha Sydney containing over 100 actors / politicians / sportsmen / writers and pioneers of the period. Most notably including ; Winston Churchill / David Lloyd George / Stanley Baldwin / M K Gandhi / Laurel & Hardy / Rudyard Kipling / G K Chesterton / Fay Wray & Jack Hobbs. Bertha Sydney was an actress and a member of the well known theatrical family which included film actor Basil Sydney (The Dam-Busters / Ivanhoe / Sea Wife & Treasure Island). She collected all the autographs for a decade after Christmas 1925. Some autographs are dedicated to her with additional messages and are dated. A typed letter & copy photographs are included to support the provenance and further detail the history written by her daughter (Sheila) who sold the book to us in 2018. Winston Churchill was Chancellor of The Exchequer between 1924-1929, this card would have been obtained during the latter part of those years. AFTAL Dealer No13 and UACC RD Memorabilia UK COA

Description:

A good original typed letter dated December 1948 on his own embossed Chartwell Westerham Kent headed paper to The Hon A A Alam MLC, clearly signed in ink at the conclusion Yours sincerely Winston S Churchill.

"Dear Mr Alam, Thank you very much for your kind message which I received through Mr Blenkinsop."

A desirable 1948 letter written on his own Chartwell headed paper.

Certification:

Churchill was the leader of the opposition in 1948 before again becoming Prime Minister in 1951. At this time he participated in The Hague Conference and was concerned that The Berlin crisis could turn into WW3. Description:

A superb original typed letter dated October 31st 1954 on embossed 10 Downing Street Whitehall headed paper to Mr Helmut Isenberg, clearly signed in ink at the conclusion Yours sincerely Winston S Churchill.

"My Dear Sir, It was with pleasure that I received the ball-bearing pen which you bought to London for my birthday. I am much obliged to you for your kind thought."

Double mounted for fine display with photographs.

A very desirable letter written and signed when he was British PM.

Certification:

Churchill was within his third term as British PM at this time (October 1951-April 1955). He had suffered a stroke in June 1953 and his declining health meant he came under pressure to resign. He chose to postpone this for a few months until April 1955 at the age of 80. Good. We would rate as 8/10. There is a minor crease to the middle of the letter. A punch hole to the top left and a paper stain to the bottom right of the page.

Description:

A single sided typed letter (dated 17th December 1910) on original Home Office Whitehall SW embossed stationary to JPT Jackson Esq ; "Dear Sir. As I have had the pleasure of making your acquaintance at Chorley, I wish to tell you how sorry I am that you failed to secure election on this occasion. I hear that you made an excellent fight, and i hope that you may have better luck on another occasion. Yours faithfully ....." The letter is clearly signed in ink at the conclusion Winston S Churchill.

 

Certification:

CERTIFICATION ; Winston Churchill served as The Home Secretary from 1910-11 in the cabinet of Liberal Prime Minister HH Asquith. This letter was written to a candidate (JPT Jackson) during the General Election of December 1910 at a time when there was a severe decline in support for The Liberal Party. Description:

A double sided original Naturalisation Oath of Allegiance Home Office stamp dated 16th June 1910. The certificate is numbered No19104 in the name of Mardiros Garabel Benham. The official parts are clearly typed with large sections detailing the applicants background handwritten in ink. The letter is then signed in ink on the second page by Winston Churchill dated 2nd June 1910 in his capacity as Secretary of State for The Home Office London.

CERTIFICATION ; Winston Churchill served as The Home Secretary from 1910-11 in the cabinet of then Liberal Prime Minister HH Asquith. Whilst in office he had to deal with the famous Tonypandy Coal Miners Dispute at a time when there was a severe decline in support for The Liberal Party. Description:

A typed letter with Chartwell letterhead (dated 6th September 1955) to Willy Sax thanking his correspondent for Schnaps. It includes a wonderful line "made from William Pears which you sent me for my birthday. It is a most agreeable gift". Clearly signed in ink Winston S Churchill. Includes the original mailing envelope.

 

Certification:
