About Yul Brynner

Yul Brynner

YUL BRYNNER d1985. Russian born stage and film actor best known for his exceptional portrayal of Mongkut King of Siam with trademark shaven-head in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I". He won an Academy Award for Best Actor in the film version and also played the role over 4,500 times on stage. He is also remembered as Rameses 2nd in The Ten Commandments (1956) / General Bounine in Anastasia (1956) and Chris Adams in The Magnificent Seven (1960). Knowing he was dying of lung cancer, he starred in a string of farewell performances of The King and I on Broadway between January-June 1985.

From the autograph collection of the Hon Frances Louise Francis-Love who worked as an extra at various Film Studios including Pinewood / Elstree and Shepperton during the late 1950s. There is a notebook from 1957-58 listing the films she worked on ; which studio and her wages that was included with her collection along with a later driving license. From a wonderful autograph book owned by Timothy Scandrett. His father worked as a film consultant around Shepperton and Pinewood film studios during the mid-late 1960s. He collected many notable film related autographs including the likes of Charlie Chaplin / Orson Wells / Peter Sellers etc within the book, many of which were dedicated To Timothy. An original circa 1979 London Palladium Theatre Programme, clearly signed on the front cover by Yul Brynner in large black marker and by Virginia McKenna in ballpoint.

 

Certification:

Obtained outside The Stage Door of The London Palladium in Autumn 1979 after a performance by a Mr J Walker , who recalled that Brynner was "quite a frightening man" with a very strong prescence and persona to approach for an autograph ! AFTAL Dealer No13 and UACC RD Memorabilia UK COA.
