Lieutenant Pigeon

Lieutenant Pigeon

LIEUTENANT PIGEON. British novelty musical group popular in the early 1970s. The group's sound was dominated by a heavy honky-tonk style piano played by Hilda Woodward. They achieved two UK hits "Mouldy Old Dough" which reached No1 in 1972 which after Amazing Grace was the biggest hit of the year, followed by "Desperate Dan" (number 17 in 1973). Both songs were largely instumental with the titles providing virtually the only lyrics. The band split up in 1978 and then re-formed in the 1980s, touring to notable success in Scandinavia. The line-up went through a number of changes. Hilda Woodward died aged 85 on 22nd February 1999.
