About Boris Karloff

Boris Karloff

BORIS KARLOFF d1969. Distinquished English actor born William Henry Pratt who attended Uppingham School before emigrating to Canada in 1910. After gaining occasional work as a film extra during the 1920s, his career finally took off in the classic hollywood horror films of the 1930s, often working alongside Lon Chaney and Bela Lugosi. Such was his popularity within the horror genre, he was simply billed as "Karloff" on the film posters of the period. He will forever be remembered for his outstanding portrayal of "The Monster" in Frankenstein (1931) / The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939). Renowned for being a true English gentleman with a real passion for the game of cricket and for his generous support of childrens charities throughout his life. Married six times, he died of pneumonia aged 81 on February 2nd 1969.

Description:

1) BORIS KARLOFF d1969. English actor born William Pratt educated at Uppingham School before emigrating to Canada in 1910. After many roles in silent film he became a household name for his outstanding portrayal of Frankensteins Monster in classics ; "Frankenstein" 1931 / "Bride of Frankenstein" 1935 and "Son of Frankenstein" 1939 , becoming so popular he was simply billed as Karloff. In contrast to the sinister characters he played on screen he was in real life a distinguished gentleman with a love of cricket who gave generously to charity. He married six times and spent his twilight years living in Sussex ; he died of pneumonia on February 2nd 1969 aged 81.

2) BELA LUGOSI d1956. Hungarian actor best known for his outstanding portrayal of Count Dracula and other classic horror roles during the 1930s-40s ; often with Boris Karloff in films such as The Raven / The Black Cat and Son of Frankenstein. Due to ill health he developed an addiction to painkillers which seriously affected his film roles ; this decline led to him living in obscurity and poverty later in his life. He died of a heart attack on August 16th 1956 aged 73.

3) LON CHANEY JNR d1973. American actor , son of silent screen actor Lon Chaney best known for his outstanding portrayal of The Wolfman during the horror films of the 1940s. The only actor to have played the role of all four of Universal Film Studios monsters ; The Wolfman / Frankenstein / Dracula and The Mummy. In later years he battled throat cancer and heart disease after decades of heavy drinking and smoking. He died of heart failure on July 12th 1973 aged 67.

An outstanding all acid free display featuring all three actors autographs on paper pages.

All signatures are in ink and are very clearly readable ; however all have a slight degree of fading due to previous longterm display in sunlight by the original seller , hence the good price for this.
