SINCE 1924 eight brave pioneering Britains have held the World Landspeed Record ; Malcolm Campbell (Sunbeam 350 & Bluebird) / Parry Thomas (Babs) / Henry Segrave (Sunbeam Mystery 1000 & Golden Arrow) / George Eyston (Thunderbolt) / John Cobb (Railton Special) / Donald Campbell (Bluebird) / Richard Noble (Thrust 2) and Andy Green (Thrust SSC). THE CURRENT holder of the Outright World Land Speed Record is Andy Green (Thrust SSC). His twin turbofan jet-powered car achieved 763.035 mph over the required one mile distance in October 1997 at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. This was the first supersonic record, breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1.016. THE WORLD WATERSPEED record of 317.6MPH has been held since 8th October 1978 by Ken Wharby with his Spirit of Australia. There have only been two official attempts to break it since then, both resulting in the death of the driver. THE WORLD ELECTRIC car speed record is currently held by Roger Schroer (Venturi VBB-3) who achieved 212.61MPH at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah USA on August 22nd 2014.
