The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute was a popular-music concert staged on 11th June 1988 at Wembley Stadium London. It was broadcast to 67 countries and an audience of 600 million. Marking the forthcoming 70th birthday (18th July 1988) of the imprisoned anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela. The concert was also referred to as Freedomfest, Free Nelson Mandela Concert and Mandela Day. In the United States, the Fox Televison Network heavily censored the political aspects of the concert. The organiser Tony Hollingsworth wanted Dire Straits (who at the time were probably the biggest band in the world) to headline the event. After delicate negotiations Dire Straits regrouped and  eventually agreed to being the headliners. They were famously joined for their set by Eric Clapton who performed his hit "Wonderful Tonight" with the group and also played rhythm guitar on the other songs performed by the band (while guitarist Jack Sonni was absent). A close friend of the original seller obtained this signed T-Shirt backstage at the Hammersmith Odeon at one of the warm-up gigs for the main event. In order to be fully prepared for Wembley on the 11th June, the group played two special concerts at this venue. These were on the 8-9th June 1988. The management of Dire Straits decided that tickets (at £10 each) should be available only to members of the Dire Straits Information Service. AFTAL Dealer No13 and UACC RD Memorabilia UK COA.

About Dire Straits

Dire Straits

DIRE STRAITS. "The Sultans of Swing" ..... Stylish English group first formed in 1977 led by guitar genius Mark Knopfler. They are best known for a string of highly successful albums including ; Dire Straits (1978) / Communique (1979) / Making Movies (1980) and then three consecutive No1s ; Love Over Gold (1982) / Brothers In Arms (1985) (which sold 30 million copies and was the first ever million selling CD) and On Every Street (1991). Dire Straits have spent over 1100 weeks on the UK albums chart (ranking fifth of all-time). The groups career spanned a combined total of 15 years. They originally split up in 1988, then reformed in 1991 and disbanded for good in 1995 (when Mark Knopfler launched his career full-time as a solo artist). There were several changes in personnel over both periods with Mark Knopfler and John Illsley, the only two constant original band-members throughout the whole time. To date they have sold an estimated 140 million albums worldwide .....
