Dorothy Dandridge

DOROTHY DANDRIDGE d1965. American actress and singer who was the first African-American actress to be nominated for an Academy award for Carmen Jones in 1954. Her first notable film role was in Tarzans Peril in 1951 alongside Lex Barker, followed in 1953 by Bright Road. In 1959, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Porgy and Bess. She died of an accidental drug overdose aged just 42 in 1965.
