ELLA FITZGERALD d1996. American jazz vocalist known as the "First Lady Of Soul" and Lady Ella. She had a vocal range spanning three octaves (Db3 to Db6), was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. She is widely considered to be one of the most notable interpreters of The Great American Songbook. Over a recording career that lasted 59 years, she was the winner of 13 Grammy Awards. She died in California of diabetes aged 79 on June 15th 1996.
