The Uglys & Steve Gibbons

The Uglys & Steve Gibbons

THE UGLYS. Birmingham band active between 1963-69 whose regular changing lineup during the period reads like a whose who of Brumbeat despite them never enjoying much commercial success. Single releases on Pye records (1965-66) include ; Wake Up My Mind / Its Alright / A Good Idea and End of The Season. Its Alright featured prominent use of a harpsichord played by Jimmy O'Neil who was a major attraction on-stage for his female fans. The record fell short of the British charts (possibly due to a record company strike) even though the group made an appearance on the popular television program 'Ready Steady Go!' to promote it. The fourth Uglys single (issued in 1966) was a great version of '"End Of The Season'" composed by Ray Davies of the Kinks. As members left the group evolved into Balls / Idle Race and the Steve Gibbons Band who had a hit with Tulane in 1976.
