Clark Gable

CLARK GABLE d1960. Leading American actor and top male movie-star of the 1930s most famous for his role as Rhett Butler in the 1939 film classic "Gone With The Wind". His performance alongside Vivien Leigh earned him his third Academy Award nomination for best actor. He earlier had won for "It Happened One Night" (1934) and had also been nominated for Mutiny On The Bounty (1935). Later movies included the submarine war film Run Silent Run Deep and his and her final film, "The Misfits" (1961) alongside Marilyn Monroe. A very heavy 60 per day smoker, he suffered with poor health in his later years. Some however blamed his premature death from a heart-attack aged just 59 in 1960 on getting in shape and losing weight too quickly for his role in The Misfits. In 1999, the American Film Institute named him the seventh Greatest Male star of all time
