JOHN WAYNE d1979. Iconic Academy and Golden Globe award winning American film actor, famous for his distinctive voice walk and rugged physical presence on screen. His career began in the silent movies of the 1920s, but he became a major star between the 1940-60s in the classic westerns and war movies of the period. His most notable roles include ; Stagecoach (1939) / The Quiet Man (1952) / The Searchers (1956) / The Alamo (1960) / The Longest Day (1962) / The Green Berets (1968) and as an Oscar winner in "True Grit" (1969). Voted by The American Film Institute as the 13th Greatest Movie-Star of all time and in a 2007 Harris Poll the third greatest American film star. A lifetime heavy smoker, he had a lung and four ribs removed in 1964 during an operation for lung cancer. He died of stomach cancer on June 11th 1979.
