LON CHANEY SR d1930. American actor of the silent film age known as "The Man of a Thousand Faces" and for being one of the most versatile and powerful actors in early cinema. He is best remembered for his pioneering characterizations of tortured, often grotesque and afflicted characters in classic early horror films like ; "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923) and "The Phantom of The Opera" (1925). His groundbreaking ability to transform his looks and his artistry in creating hideous characters (using his own innovative film makeup techniques) make him a legend of 1920s film. His son Lon Chaney Jr later also enjoyed a highly successful career as a star of many of the classic horror films of the 1930s. Lon Chaney died of bronchial lung cancer aged just 47 in 1930
