TOM PRYCE d1977. British F1 driver with Token and Shadow. 42GPs with two podiums. The only Welsh driver ever to have won a Formula 1 Race and to lead a Grand Prix. He was sadly killed in a freak accident during the 1977 South African GP at Kyalami after being the fastest in a wet practice. On Lap 21, he unfortunately hit a young race marshall at 170 mph who was running across the circuit assisting with an incident ; Pryce was killed instantly by his flying fire extinquisher aged just 27. In 2007, it was announced that a statue of Tom Pryce would be erected in his home town of Ruthin by the local council to mark the 30th anniversary of his death. On 23rd January 2008, the Trust Fund members met in the Ruthin Castle Hotel, under the chairmanship of David Richards (Prodrive), to discuss the progress of the intended memorial. The memorial was later unveiled on 11th June 2009.
