CHARLIE CHAPLIN d1977. Academy-Award winning English actor whose extraordinary career spanned 75 years, he is widely considered to be one of the finest mime / comic artists ever. His early silent film classics include ; The Gold Rush (1925) / The Circus (1928) / City Lights (1931) and Modern Times (1936). His principal character "The Tramp" remains to this day one of the iconic images of early cinema. He died aged 88 after a long period of declining health during the 1970s. In March 1978, his body was mysteriously stolen by Polish mechanics for ransom ; the plot failed. His corpse was recovered eleven weeks later and was then reburied in concrete to avoid any similar occurence in the future. In 1999, The AFI ranked him the 10th Greatest Male screen legend of all time.
