This and his decision to put family first meant that he was never well known outside of the United Kingdom. He is nowadays probably best known outside of his homeland for his Academy / Golden Globe and BATFTA award-winning performance as Sir thomas More in the 1966 film "A Man for All Seasons". He died of Leukhemia aged 86 on 19th March 2008.
